Tropical Storm Lee formed in the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday and forecasters predict it will become a major hurricane as it approaches the Caribbean.
The storm was located late this afternoon about 2,115 kilometers east of the Lesser Antilles, with maximum winds of 75 kilometers per hour and moving west-northwest, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
It is expected to become an “extremely dangerous” hurricane on Friday as it moves over very warm waters and passes northeast of the Caribbean region, according to the institution.
Lee is the twelfth storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.
In August, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration updated its forecasts, warning that this year’s hurricane season would be longer than normal. Between 14 and 21 named storms are forecast. Of those, six to eleven could become hurricanes, and two to five are likely to become major hurricanes.
