Sixteen people are killed and 28 injured in a Russian attack on a market in the Donetsk region

At least 16 people were killed this Wednesday in a Russian bombing of a market in Kostantinovka, a town in eastern Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on social media. A child is among the 16 dead and at least 28 others are injured.

“Russian terrorist artillery killed 16 people in the town of Kostantinovka, Donetsk region,” Zelensky said, before reporting that the attack hit a market, shops and a pharmacy.

“Unfortunately, the number of deaths and injuries could rise,” he said.

“If anyone in the world is still trying to deal with something Russian, it means turning a blind eye to this reality. The daring of evil. My condolences to all who have lost loved ones! This Russian evil must be defeated as soon as possible,” Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Twitter.

“44 people were affected: 16 died and 28 were injured. One rescuer is among those injured. The National Emergency Situations Service and the police are conducting a search and rescue operation,” said Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.

Kostjantynivka is a frontline town of about 70,000 in the eastern industrial region of Donetsk, which has been the epicenter of fighting since Russia launched its invasion in February 2022.

Dontetsk has been partially controlled by Kremlin-backed separatists since 2014, and Russia claimed to have annexed the region along with three others late last year.
