Deaths from Covid-19 are rising in East Asia and the Middle East, as are hospitalizations in Europe, at a time when many countries have stopped providing these data, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Wednesday.
“Only 43 countries continue to report deaths [por Covid-19] and only 20 give data on hospitalizations,” lamented the director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at a press conference.
“The increase in deaths and hospitalizations shows that Covid is here to stay and we still need tools to fight it,” said the Ethiopian expert.
Tedros acknowledged that currently no variant of the coronavirus has emerged as dominant worldwide, although one of them, EG.5 (considered “of interest” by the WHO and named “Eris” by experts) is on the rise.
“One of the main concerns of the WHO is the people and risk groups who have not received doses of the anti-covid vaccine recently,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who asked those who had been advised to get vaccinated to go to medical centers to do it.
