Argentina withdraws awards given to Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet

The Argentine president, Alberto Fernández, ordered this Thursday to withdraw the Order of Merit and the Order of Liberator San Martín awarded to the late Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.

According to presidential spokeswoman Gabriela Cerruti, the decree will be published on Thursday in the Official Gazette and will prohibit Pinochet’s heirs from using the insignia, according to the Argentine news agency Télam.

The measure “is related to the upcoming commemoration of the coup d’état in Chile, in the context of 40 years of democracy in Argentina and our country’s constant struggle against denial, for justice, for the truth and for memory.” Cerrutti said.

On September 11, 1973, a coup in Chile that assassinated President-elect Salvador Allende brought Augusto Pinochet to power.

Several Heads of State and Government will attend the evocation of that date, including the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa.
