The US and the UK sanction Russian cybercriminals from the Trickbot group

The United States and Britain on Thursday announced the imposition of economic sanctions against 11 suspected cybercriminals, residents of Russia and members of the Trickbot group, several of which were subject to similar sanctions in February.

“Russia has long been a haven for cybercriminals, particularly the Trickbot group,” the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement.

The eleven people targeted by these economic sanctions are administrators, analysts and computer programmers, he specified.

The Trickbot group is accused of attacking hospitals and health centers in the United States of America (US) at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and installing “ransomware” (a malicious “software” that hijacking data and then charging for access) in three Minnesota medical facilities, disrupting the operation of their computer and telephone networks and causing an ambulance diversion, the US Treasury Department (equivalent to the Department of Finance).

In addition, a computer virus developed by this group infected millions of computers, including those of companies and individuals in the US.

The Treasury Department also indicated that the Justice Department will simultaneously release nine formal charges against nine people in connection with the Trickbot and Conti Ransomware “malware” programs, including seven people who were charged today.
