Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his shock on Saturday over the consequences of the earthquake that killed hundreds of people in Morocco in a message sent to King Mohammed VI, official CCTV television reported.

“On behalf of the Chinese Government and people, I would like to express my deep sorrow for the victims and my deepest condolences to the families,” Xi said in the message to the Moroccan monarch.

“I am confident that, under the leadership of His Majesty the King, the government and people of Morocco will be able to overcome the impact of this disaster and rebuild their homeland as quickly as possible,” he added.

According to the National Institute of Geophysics of Morocco, the earthquake reached a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale and occurred in the Marrakech region (north) at 11:11 p.m., at a depth of eight kilometers.
