An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale was recorded this Saturday off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, according to data from the United States Geological Survey.
The earthquake was recorded at 9:43 p.m. local time (3:43 p.m. in Lisbon) and originated at a depth of 9.9 kilometers, according to data from the same service.
The Indonesian Geophysical Institute (BMKG), cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP), indicates that there is no immediate risk of a tsunami, but warns of the possibility of aftershocks.
A resident of Malei, a village in Central Sulawesi, reported that the shock lasted “about five seconds” and caused a power outage.
In November, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Java, also in Indonesia, killing 602 people, most of them victims of building collapses or landslides.
More recently, in April, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Sumatra, but caused no fatalities.
