A Spanish citizen, director of a non-governmental organization, died in Ukraine as a result of a Russian attack on the vehicle she was traveling in, the Spanish government reported, quoted by the Europa Press agency.
Speaking in New Delhi, where he is attending the G20 summit, current Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said the Spanish government had received “verbal confirmation” of the death of Road to Relief director Emma Igual , which has been helping to evacuate civilians from the front in Ukraine since 2022 and provides humanitarian aid to the areas most affected by the war.
The Spanish minister added that Madrid is still waiting for “a certified confirmation from the Ukrainian authorities”.
Road to Relief had already published on the social network Instagram that the vehicle in which four members of its team were traveling had been hit in a Russian attack that took place on Saturday morning.
The team of four employees – one German, one Swede, one Canadian and one Spanish Emma Igual – traveled from Sloviansk to Bakhmut to assess the needs of civilians caught in the ongoing crossfire in the town of Ivanivske, Donetsk region.
The organization reported at the time that the first two were injured and the third died, but did not know what happened to Emma Igual.
The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, which started on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the worst security crisis since World War II (1939-1945) and caused a large number of casualties over the past eighteen months. only soldiers, but also civilians, impossible to count as long as the conflict continues.
The invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by most of the international community, which has responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and Russia impose political and economic sanctions.
Ukraine’s Western allies have supplied weapons to Kiev and approved successive sanctions packages against Russian interests to try to reduce Moscow’s ability to finance the war effort.
