IMF and World Bank promise urgent financial aid to Morocco

The International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank (WB) and other international organizations committed this Sunday to provide urgent financial resources to help Morocco face the consequences of Friday’s earthquake.

“With all our international partners, we stand with Morocco to provide all necessary support for any urgent short-term financial needs and reconstruction efforts,” they said in a joint statement.

“We will mobilize our technical and financial instruments and our assistance in a coordinated manner to help the Moroccan people overcome this terrible tragedy,” they added.

The joint statement was released at the end of the G20 summit in New Delhi.

The document is signed by the director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, and the presidents of the WB, Ajay Banga, of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and of the African Union, Azali Assoumani.

The document is also signed by the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, whose country currently holds the rotating presidency of the G20, and the French President, Emmanuel Macron.

Morocco suffered a violent earthquake on Friday night, which caused more than two thousand deaths and thousands of injuries, in addition to destroying several places, including part of the tourist city of Marrakech.

In the statement, the institutions expressed “total solidarity with the Moroccan authorities and people”, as well as their desire to support the country of 37 million inhabitants.

“We have been and continue to be committed partners of Morocco, supporting the authorities in building an inclusive and resilient economy with strong institutions. This strength will be useful to the Moroccan people as they recover from the devastation of the earthquake,” they added.
