Nine injured after engine fire on Air China plane in Singapore

Nine passengers were injured after an engine fire on an Air China plane on Sunday sent smoke into the plane’s cabin as it landed in Singapore, according to the city-state’s airport.

The Airbus A320, with 146 passengers and nine crew members, made an emergency landing around 4:15 p.m. on Sunday (9:15 a.m. in Lisbon), Changi Airport reported in a statement on the social network Facebook.

The flight had departed from Chengdu, capital of the Chinese province of Sichuan.

Nine people suffered minor injuries related to smoke inhalation and abrasions during the evacuation of the device, according to the same note.

The pilot declared an emergency after detecting smoke in the forward cargo hold and a bathroom.

Smoke obscured the plane’s lights and flight attendants asked passengers to remain calm and remain seated, after some got up, a passenger told Chinese media.

The fire in the left engine was extinguished after the plane landed, according to Chinese media.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the cause was a mechanical failure in the engine, Air China said in a statement posted on social media today.
