Nine passengers were injured after an engine fire on an Air China plane sent smoke into the plane’s cabin as it landed in Singapore on Sunday, according to the city-state’s airport.
The Airbus A320, carrying 146 passengers and nine crew members, made an emergency landing around 4:15 p.m. (9:15 a.m. in Lisbon) on Sunday, Changi Airport said in a statement on the social network Facebook.

The plane had taken off from Chengdu, the capital of China’s Sichuan province.
Nine people suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation and abrasions during the evacuation of the device, the same report said.
The pilot declared a state of emergency after detecting smoke in the forward cargo hold and in a toilet.
Smoke obscured the plane’s lights and flight attendants asked passengers to remain calm and remain seated after some stood up, a passenger told Chinese media.

According to Chinese media, the fire in the left engine was extinguished after the plane landed.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the cause was a mechanical defect in the engine, Air China said. in a statement published on social media today.
