North Korean leader leaves in convoy to meet Putin

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un left on Monday by train for Russia, where he is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a bid to strengthen bilateral relations between the countries, South Korean government sources said.

“The secret services believe that the convoy has already left and is heading towards the city of Vladivostok,” the same sources told the Yonhap news agency, cited by EuropaPress.

North Korean officials have not yet commented on Kim’s trip.

The American newspaper The New York Times had previously announced that Kim planned to make this trip, which could last about 20 hours, aboard a special armored train.

Kim and Putin are expected to discuss the possibility of Russia buying weapons from North Korea for use in the war in Ukraine.

If confirmed, the visit will be Kim’s first to Russia in the last four and a half years and his first departure from the country since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pyongyang has been trying to boost its relations with Russia as South Korea, the United States and Japan increase their security and defense collaboration.
