Ukrainian authorities on Monday cited “new advances” that had taken place in recent days on the outskirts of the city of Bakhmut, adding that they had recaptured about 50 square kilometers in the area since the start of the counteroffensive.
Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said Kiev’s armed forces have “achieved some successes in the Klischivka and Andrivka areas” in eastern Ukraine’s Bakhmut region.
“Some progress has been made. In the past week we liberated two square kilometers and during the offensive campaign we liberated 49 square kilometers on the outskirts of Bakhmut.”said Maliar, quoted by the Ukrainian agency Ukrinform.
The government official’s information has not yet been confirmed by journalists or independent entities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the front on September 5, on the outskirts of Bakhmut, located in Donetsk province.
This is one of the main points of contention between Kiev’s forces and Moscow’s forces in recent months.
Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February last year, gained control of Bakhmut after the presence of mercenaries from the Wagner group. After abandoning their positions, these elements transferred operational command to Russian forces.
