Brussels will send more than two billion euros to support Greece after fires and floods

The European Commission announced this Tuesday a package worth more than two billion euros to financially support Greece after the devastating fires and floods that devastated part of the country.

The announcement was made by the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, after a meeting with the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriákos Mitsotákis, in Strasbourg (France), on the eve of the debate on the State of the Union in the European Parliament (EP). .

Von der Leyen said the EU must use cohesion funds from “the last period that would otherwise be lost.”

“We are a union of solidarity,” said the president of the Commission, guaranteeing that the 27 will do more to help populations that have suffered extreme weather events.

The €2.15 billion to help Greece recover from the devastating fires is essential for Kyriákos Mitsotákis, who revealed that “never before has such a vast area been destroyed by fires.”

And after that, “floods devastated the region.”

In two months, Evros experienced disasters of “historic proportions,” he considered.
