The President of the US House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, gave in to pressure from the party’s most conservative wing on Tuesday and gave the green light to an investigation aimed at impeaching Joe Biden.
“I am directing our committee in the House of Representatives to open a formal investigation impeachmenthe said, stating that the Democratic president lied to the American people about his son Hunter’s business dealings abroad.
McCarthy said the House Oversight Committee’s investigation so far has revealed a “culture of corruption” surrounding the Biden family.
These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption, and they deserve further investigation by the House of Representatives,” McCarthy, Republican of California, said outside the House of Representatives office on Capitol Hill.
Hunter Biden’s deals, made while his father was Barack Obama’s vice president, have been a constant target of Republicans.
However, there is no evidence yet that Joe Biden was involved in anything illegal.
McCarthy has been under pressure for months from the right wing of his party, loyal to Donald Trump, to open an impeachment inquiry against the 80-year-old Biden.
The White House immediately condemned the measure, calling it “extreme politics at its worst.”
“Republicans in the House of Representatives have been investigating the president for nine months and have found no evidence of illegality,” Ian Sams, White House spokesperson for Oversight and Investigations, said on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter.
