Russia accused Ukraine on Wednesday of carrying out a missile attack against the port city of Sevastopol, in Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014, injuring at least 24 people.
The attack occurred around 3:00 a.m. (1:00 a.m. in Lisbon) and, despite the activation of anti-aircraft defenses, caused a fire at the Svemorzavod naval shipyard, according to the Russian-imposed governor of Sevastopol.
“According to preliminary information, the fire was caused by a missile attack,” Mikhail Razvozhaev wrote on the Telegram messaging platform.
Razvozhaev, who responded to the scene of the fire together with emergency services, said that “as a result of the attack, a total of 24 people were injured, four of whom were moderately injured.”
The head of Sevastopol, whose port houses the main base of the Russian Black Sea fleet, asked citizens not to broadcast videos of the “incident” so as to “not help the enemy.”
The Svemorzavod Naval Shipyard produces and repairs ships for the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
In recent months, the Crimean peninsula and the port of Sevastopol have been frequent targets of Ukrainian attacks, according to war reports from local authorities and the Russian Defense Ministry.
