The United Nations Migration Organization said on Wednesday that there are at least 30,000 displaced people in the city of Derna, eastern Libya, as a result of the floods that have left thousands dead.
“There are at least 30,000 displaced persons” in Derna, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a report on the situation in eastern Libya following the passage of Storm Daniel in the early hours of Monday.
Emergency services say at least 2,300 people have died in the floods that devastated the city of Derna.
The spokesman for the Libyan Emergency and Rescue Service under the internationally recognized government in Tripoli, Oussama Ali, told Agence France Presse that flooding caused by Storm Daniel left “more than 2,300 dead” and around 7,000 injured in Derna, while more than five thousand people are missing .
Most of the areas affected by the bad weather are in eastern Libya, which is under the control of Benghazi’s government, which is not internationally recognized.
