The leaders of Russia and North Korea end talks

The meeting between the leaders of Russia and North Korea, held this Wednesday in the Russian Far East, ended after about two hours of talks, the Kremlin (Presidency) announced.

The talks began in the presence of delegations, followed by a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, Russian agency TASS said.

After the meeting, the two leaders took part in a lunch offered by Putin to Kim, Russian agency Interfax said, as quoted by Spain’s EFE.

The summit will take place at Russia’s Vostochny cosmodrome, in Siberia’s Amur region.

At the start of the meeting, Kim pledged to support Russia’s “holy struggle” to defend its security interests, in an apparent reference to the war in Ukraine, the US news agency AP reported.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the two leaders do not plan to sign any documents, including a joint statement, following the results of today’s talks.

Peskov also noted that Russian support for United Nations Security Council sanctions against North Korea does not hinder the development of relations between Moscow and Pyongyang, Peskov said in response to journalists.

“Russia maintains its position in the United Nations and in the Security Council, but this cannot, should not and will not be an obstacle to the development of relations between Russia and North Korea,” he said.

Peskov also said that Russia and North Korea will build relations based on the interests of both countries and that cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang will not be directed against anyone, in an allusion to the United States.

This is the North Korean leader’s second official visit to Russia, following talks with his Russian counterpart in Vladivostok in April 2019.
