The meeting between the leaders of Russia and North Korea held this Wednesday in the Russian Far East concluded after about two hours of talks, the Kremlin (presidency) announced.
The talks began in the presence of delegations, followed by a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un, according to the Russian agency TASS.
After the meeting, the two leaders participated in a lunch offered by Putin to Kim, reported the Russian agency Interfax, cited by the Spanish EFE.
The summit will take place at the Russian Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Siberian Amur region.
At the start of the meeting, Kim promised to support Russia’s “sacred struggle” to defend its security interests, in an apparent reference to the war in Ukraine, according to the US news agency AP.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said the two leaders had no intention of signing any documents, including a joint statement, following the results of Wednesday’s negotiations.
Peskov also noted that Russia’s support for United Nations Security Council sanctions against North Korea does not impede the development of relations between Moscow and Pyongyang, Peskov said, in response to reporters.
“Russia maintains its position in the United Nations, in the Security Council, but this cannot, should not and will not be an obstacle to the development of relations between Russia and North Korea,” he stated.
Peskov also stated that Russia and North Korea will build relations based on the interests of both countries and that cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang will not be directed against anyone, referring to the United States.
This is the second official visit of the North Korean leader to Russia, after holding talks with his Russian counterpart in April 2019, in Vladivostok.
