A delegation from the Foreign Affairs Committee (EP) of the European Parliament was prevented from entering the country to follow the Tunisian political situation and demanded explanations for this “unprecedented conduct” since 2011.
In a statement, the EP condemned “the decision of the Tunisian authorities to prevent the delegation from entering” and demanded “detailed explanations.”
“This is unprecedented behavior since the democratic revolution of 2011,” the parliament added.
The Foreign Affairs Committee delegation traveled to the country for a follow-up mission that followed one carried out in April 2022 when MEPs expressed concern about a possible democratic backslide in Tunisia.
“We remain prepared for dialogue and will insist on it on critical issues, and we remember that this Parliament has always approved a comprehensive cooperation agenda, which includes strengthening democratic and financial support” for Tunisia, the EP added.
Tunisia “urgently needs a comprehensive national dialogue, without which the prospects for political and economic development remain bleak.”
