The death toll from flooding in the Libyan coastal city of Derna, in the east of the country, has risen to 11,300 people and search and rescue operations continue, the Libyan Red Crescent said on Thursday.
Another 10,100 people have been reported missing in that city, according to the non-governmental organization’s general secretary, Marie el-Drese.
Thousands of people were buried in mass graves in Derna, authorities said on Thursday, as search teams continued to scour the ruins left behind by the devastating floods and the mayor said the number of victims could triple.
The floods, fed by two failing dams, swept away entire families on Sunday evening and exposed the vulnerabilities of the oil-rich country that has been mired in conflict since a 2011 uprising toppled longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
