More than 260 people have been arrested during protests marking the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death

Iranian authorities announced today that they detained more than 260 people on Saturday during protests marking the first anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, who was detained in Tehran for wearing the veil incorrectly.

The young Iranian Kurd, detained and beaten by Iran’s morality police for violating the country’s strict female dress code, died days later in hospital, sparking a wave of protests across the country at the time that led to the arrest of thousands of people .

Authorities explained that Saturday’s arrests correspond to a period of 24 hours and are justified by violations of public security rules, incitement to protests and possession of weapons, the Iranian newspaper reported. Shargh.

On Saturday, several cities in Iran’s Kurdish-majority northern region supported a general strike called by Kurdish organizations and political parties to protest Amini’s death.

Security forces carried out a large deployment of helicopters and armored vehicles, the civilian organization Hengaw said, reporting more than a dozen identified detainees, including several female activists.

Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported on Saturday the death of a member of the pro-government Basij militia in Fars province during protests.
