Pilots Nick Macy and Chris Rushing died this Sunday after a collision between the planes they were flying while landing at the end of the race in the United States Air Racing Championship, the airline said. NBCin which a source from the organization is cited.
The planes collided in a “landing accident” at the end of the event’s T-6 Gold race, which took place in Reno, Nevada.
Nick Macy piloted a plane called the Six-Cat, while Chris Rushing piloted the Baron’s Revenge. Both had won the race in previous editions.

After the accident, organizers canceled the remaining races.
“I am completely devastated and heartbroken today,” Fred Telling, president of the Reno Air Racing Association and president of the T-6 class, said in a statement.
“These two pilots were not only an integral part of the National Championship Air Race family, they were also part of my family,” he added.
There are no records of additional deaths or injuries.
