“The End of Globalization” is the theme of a new casino conference

Bill Emmott and Philippe Riès are the guest speakers for another New Casino Conference, which will take place next Thursday the 21st at Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, 100, in Lisbon, at 5 p.m. The theme to be analyzed will be: “The end of globalization – the impossible alliances” and is based on the premise that globalization as we have known it for the past thirty years has come to an end. During this period, national borders seemed to have dissolved in the face of the strength of global trade and finance, while industrial relocation was accepted as an inevitability, justified only by comparative costs of production. China, the main beneficiary of the West’s deindustrialization, saw its economic (and political and military) strength reach levels in the late twentieth century that were difficult to imagine. But the fascination with which much of the world viewed the phenomenon of globalization until recently seems to have prevented the reading of other, less favorable consequences for Western countries.

In this painful awakening for the Western world, deglobalization has become a topic. The nationalist spirits are back, a bit like what happened after the First World War and which led to the collapse of the world market, the economic crisis and with it the explosion of the Nazi and fascist nationalist movements and ultimately the Second World War.

These and other questions will be answered by the British Bill Emmott and the Frenchman Phillippe Riès. Emmott is co-founder and co-director of the Global Commission on Post-Pandemic Policy and has been a recognized author on international relations and policy since his 13 years as editor-in-chief of The Economist magazine. He is a fellow of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, a trustee of the Long Room Hub for Arts & Humanities at Trinity College Dublin and president of the Japan Society of the United Kingdom. He is the author of works such as The Fate of the West – the battle to save the world’s most successful political idea (2017); and Japan’s Far More Female Future (2020).

Philippe Riès, in turn, was a journalist at the French Press Agency for 26 years, editor-in-chief of the delegation in Tokyo (1985-1989), head of the Economics department in Paris (1990-1996), senior correspondent in Hong Kong (1997-1998) and Director of the Delegation in Brussels (2003-2007). He published his articles in the newspaper for more than ten years online Media share. His bibliography includes works such as This crisis came in Asia (1998), Citoyen du Monde (with Carlos Ghosn, 2003), Le jour où la France à fait faillite or The European Malade of Democracy.

This will be the fourth Casino Conference, a cycle promoted by Círculo Eça de Queiroz, Grémio Literário and Centro Nacional de Cultura, which started in May. The last of these is scheduled for October 23 and will debate the future of the democratic system.
