A ship loaded with wheat leaves the Ukrainian port for Egypt

A ship with wheat left a Ukrainian port bound for Egypt, Ukrainian authorities announced this Friday, the second time in a week that a corridor created by Kiev was used to avoid the blockade and Russian threats.

“The Aroyat ship left the port of Tchornomorsk loaded with 17,600 tons of Ukrainian wheat bound for Egypt,” reported Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Oleksandre Koubrakov on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

A first ship loaded with wheat had already safely left the same port on September 19, as Ukraine seeks to establish safe sea routes to transport agricultural production.

This after Moscow abandoned, in July, an agreement that allowed the export of Ukrainian agricultural products, essential for the country’s economy and global food security, through the Black Sea.

These sea corridors, the coasts of the allied Bosphorus countries, defy Russian threats to sink ships entering and leaving Ukrainian ports.

Russia has not attacked these corridors, but periodically bombs grain facilities in Ukrainian ports.

Kiev wants to establish supply routes to Africa, which is in great need of Ukrainian production, and counter Russian influence there, as Vladimir Putin promised free wheat delivery to certain African states this summer.

Russia and Ukraine are two major agricultural powers whose production is crucial for global food security. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and international sanctions against Moscow have destabilized supplies.
