Italian police arrested 52 people across the country this Friday as part of an operation against organized crime group ‘Ndrangheta.
More than 400 carabinieri were deployed nationwide in the “Karpanthos” operation.
According to the ANSA agency, the suspects are accused of crimes such as mafia association, criminal drug trafficking organization, extortion, theft and money laundering.
Of those arrested, 38 have been arrested, six have been placed under house arrest and eight will have to report regularly to the police.
Italian authorities identify the ‘Ndrangheta as the most powerful organized crime group in Italy, due to their control over much of the cocaine trade reaching Europe.
The reach of the mafia organization extended beyond its original base in the southern region of Calabria and beyond the borders of Italy.
