The pilot of a small twin-engine plane threatened for several hours this Saturday to crash into a supermarket in Mississippi, in the southern United States, to finally land and be arrested, local authorities announced.
Around 5 a.m. local time, Tupelo police were notified that the pilot of a plane was flying over the city of nearly 38,000 people, he said on his Facebook page.
“The pilot has contacted emergency services and is threatening to intentionally crash into a Wal Mart,” the statement said without giving the pilot’s reasons.
A “dangerous” situation
The plane finally landed five hours later and the pilot was taken into custody, the Benton County sheriff’s office, an hour’s drive from Tupelo, told AFP.
According to flight tracking site FlightAware, the plane was a Beechcraft King Air 90, a plane almost 11m long and with a wingspan of just over 15m.
The Mississippi emergency services were on alert all morning in the face of this situation described as “dangerous” by the Tupelo police, who asked the neighbors to avoid the area.
