The European Union (EU) must show solidarity with Italy in managing the increase in the arrival of migrants and refugees to its southern coast, defended this Saturday the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell.
“We must show all our solidarity with Italy in a difficult time,” said Borrell, in an interview with France 24 and Radio France International, guaranteeing that the European Union will support the country.
According to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, it is necessary to have “border controls that go beyond security measures.”
Furthermore, he added, it is essential to have agreements with the countries of origin. [de migrantes] and transit systems that allow them to regularly receive the migration they need and also “guarantee the deportation of illegal immigrants” who “risk their lives for nothing.”
Josep Borrell warned on Friday of the threat that the migration problem will dissolve the EU due to the deep cultural differences between European countries and their inability to create a common policy.
Migration could be “a dissolving force for the European Union”, he said, stating that it was time for the bloc of 27 to work to create a new world order in which countries in the global south have greater respect and power.
Between Monday and Wednesday of last week, some ten thousand people, more than the entire population of Lampedusa, arrived on the Italian island in 199 boats, according to the United Nations migration agency.
These immigrants come mainly from Africa and, in particular, from Tunisia, a country in economic difficulties, whose president, Kais Saied, gave an incendiary speech in February about illegal immigration.
In her speech before the United Nations General Assembly, the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, called on the States present to launch “a ruthless war” against migrant traffickers, ensuring that her country is willing to launch efforts against “slave traders of the third millennium.”
