Azerbaijan says it is working with Russia to disarm Karabakh separatists

Azerbaijani soldiers and Russian peacekeepers are working together to disarm separatist fighters in Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijani army spokesman Anar Eyvazov revealed on Saturday.

“We are cooperating closely with Russian peacekeepers, carrying out demilitarization. We have already seized weapons and ammunition,” Anar Eyvazov told reporters in Shusha, a district on the outskirts of the rebel stronghold of Stepanakert.

Something that occurs three days after Azerbaijan launched a lightning offensive in the region, forcing the rebels to sue for peace and accept disarmament.

Russia sent several thousand peacekeeping troops to the region following a brief but brutal war in 2020, in which Azerbaijan regained much of its territory, land that had been under the control of separatist forces since they won a conflict that lasted for years in the 1990s and cost tens of thousands of lives.

The separatists agreed to disarm under a ceasefire agreement reached on Thursday, but Eyvazov said the process “could take time” because some of the rebels were in remote mountainous districts.
