Crimean bridge explosion: at least three dead, Russian investigators say

Just started the investigation, Russia gives a first assessment of the explosion that hit the Crimean bridge this Saturday. The driver of the truck bomb has already been identified, according to Russia.

At least three people were killed in the explosion that damaged the Crimean bridge linking Russia with the annexed Ukrainian peninsula, Russian investigators announced, claiming to have identified the driver of the truck bomb.

“According to preliminary data, three people died as a result of the accident. They were probably the passengers of a car that was near the truck when it exploded,” the Russian Investigative Committee said in a press release.

According to this source, “the bodies of two victims – a man and a woman – have already been removed from the water.”

Is the driver already identified?

The Investigative Committee, the body in charge of the main criminal investigations in Russia, also claimed to have “established the identity of the truck and its owner” suspected of being at the origin of the explosion.

It would be a resident of the Krasnodar region in southern Russia. “An investigation has been opened at his place of residence. The route of the truck and the relevant documents are being studied,” the investigators added.

The explosion of this truck caused this Saturday a large fire and damage to this key road and rail infrastructure for the supply of Crimea, a peninsula annexed in 2014 by Russia.

It is also a symbolically strong project linking Crimea with mainland Russia, which was built at great expense and opened in 2018 by Vladimir Putin himself. Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility for this attack.
