Armenia demands UN mission in Nagorno-Karabakh region

This Saturday, Armenia demanded that the United Nations (UN) immediately send a mission to monitor the situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

“The international community must make every effort to immediately send a UN mission to verify and evaluate the human rights situation and the humanitarian and security situation on the ground,” said Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan. , at the UN General Assembly, in New York.

Azerbaijan launched an operation earlier this week in this separatist region inhabited mainly by Armenians, achieving a lightning victory. Armenian separatists agreed to hand over their weapons on Friday.

This Saturday, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov promised, also at the UN General Assembly, to treat the region’s Armenian majority as “equal citizens.”

However, Armenia fears an “ethical cleansing” and considers that the offensive launched by Azerbaijan “was not accidental.”

“Unfortunately, we do not have a partner for peace, but rather a country that openly declares that ‘right is on the side of the strong’ and that constantly uses force to disrupt the peace process,” added the head of diplomacy. Armenia.

Nagorno-Karabakh was annexed to Azerbaijan in 1921 by the Soviet power, but is mainly inhabited by Armenians.

This mountainous enclave was in the past the scene of two wars between the former Soviet republics of Azerbaijan and Armenia: one from 1988 to 1994 (30,000 deaths) and another in the fall of 2020 (6,500 deaths).
