One police officer was killed and another was wounded in an attack that occurred early Sunday morning in northern Kosovo, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti announced on the social network Facebook.
Kurti said it was a terrorist attack, that the attackers were professionals with masks and heavy weapons and that the shooting continues.
The two men were patrolling near a road that they reported was blocked when the police unit was “attacked from different positions, with heavy weapons, including grenades.”
The Prime Minister immediately condemned the attack: “We condemn this criminal and terrorist attack.”
“Organized crime, with the financial and logistical support of those responsible in Belgrade, attacks our country,” he accused.
The Chief Executive visited the injured police officer and said that this Sunday he will be discharged from the hospital.
Northern Kosovo is the scene of recurring unrest. Tensions increased in May when Kosovo authorities decided to appoint Albanian mayors in four Serb-majority municipalities.
More than 30 soldiers from KFOR, the NATO-led force in Kosovo, were injured in late May in clashes with Serbian protesters.
Serbia refuses to recognize the independence of its former province, whose population of 1.8 million, the vast majority of Albanian origin, includes a Serbian community of around 120,000 people, living mainly in northern Kosovo.
After a conflict that left 13,000 dead, most of them Kosovar Albanians, relations between the two former enemies go from crisis to crisis.
