This Monday, Google announced Nuvem, a new system of transatlantic submarine cables to connect Portugal, Bermuda and the United States, which the Minister of Infrastructure describes as a “very important investment”.
This new system, named after the Portuguese word “cloud,” says the tech company, “will improve the resilience of the Atlantic Ocean network and help respond to the growing demand for digital services.”
The route of the new cable “will add diversity to international routes and support the development of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure for the continents and countries involved.”
Cloud moorings “embraced this opportunity and urgency and quickly emerged as gateways and ‘hubs’ for international connectivity,” Google says.
In recent years, the Bermuda government has made “significant efforts to attract investment in submarine cable infrastructure and create an Atlantic digital ‘hub’ – including passing new legislation to create cable corridors and simplify licensing.”
With plans to dock in Portugal, Nuvem is “the newest member of the Portuguese submarine cable portfolio that also includes Equiano, the recently completed system connecting Portugal to Togo, Nigeria, Namibia, South Africa and Saint Helena,” Google adds to.
“Google’s investment embodies our vision for Portugal in the telecommunications and data sector: establishing our country as a thriving gateway to Europe, promoting robust connections with other continents. The Portuguese government considers this investment very important and was only possible thanks to the great coordination and dialogue between the Ministry, Portuguese entities and Google”says Infrastructure Minister João Galamba, quoted in the statement.
“Our goal is to transform these information highways into catalysts that attract additional investments in cutting-edge technology sectors that propel the country towards an effective digital transformation. This endeavor has been our consistent focus in recent months and has fueled our efforts to attract this type of investment. , through improvements in our communications infrastructures and defining a clear roadmap for the sector,” the government official concluded.
Nuvem “will not only be the first cable to land in this robust environment, but also the first to connect Bermuda to Europe,” the technology adds.
“The Bermuda Business Development Agency (BDA) welcomes Google’s announcement that Bermuda will be home to a new transatlantic cable that is on track to become an Atlantic digital hub,” said David Hart, executive chairman (CEO) of the Bermuda Business Development Agency.
BDA “has long argued that Bermuda’s central location makes it an ideal arrival and connection point for submarine cables between the Americas, Europe and Africa, and we are very excited that these efforts have paid off. Approximately 95% of global communications are via submarine cable networks, Bermuda’s role as a ‘switch’ for international data traffic will provide greater network resilience and redundancy for countries on both sides of the Atlantic in the coming decades,” he added.
On the United States side, the Nuvem will have South Carolina as its port of call.
“The arrival of the cable will further establish the state as a growing technology hub, increasing connectivity and job diversification”following in the footsteps of Firmina, who arrived in South Carolina early this year and will eventually link up with Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.
“The Cloud is expected to be deployed in 2026 and will add capacity, increase reliability and reduce latency for Google users and Google Cloud customers around the world,” the technology company said. Together with Firmina and Equiano “it will create new and important data corridors connecting North America, South America, Europe and Africa – serving as a kind of underwater roots that strengthen the intercontinental network, as time brings together people and economies from across the whole world,” Google concludes.
