The President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, assured this Monday that his country’s military support for Ukraine does not include recently acquired weapons, explaining that these will only serve to modernize his country’s Armed Forces.
“We are not going to spend billions on weapons and then offer them,” said the Polish head of state, referring to speculation that the new weapons systems acquired by Poland were intended for the Ukrainian resistance against the Russian invasion.
“Sending (to Ukraine) any new equipment that we are acquiring at the moment, such as the K2 howitzer launching system or the K9 tanks, is out of the question. These equipment should serve to strengthen the Polish army,” Duda said, in a statement. interview with the Polish newspaper Super Express.
“When old equipment is replaced by modern equipment, I have no problem sending it to the Ukrainians,” added the president, who regretted the criticism of this decision by some sectors of the population.
Duda was also upset by criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week at the United Nations General Assembly debate, who rebuked his allies for the unilateral measures they imposed to ban the import of Ukrainian grain.
“In Poland many people felt offended. Poles, both public authorities and ordinary people, made a lot of sacrifice to help Ukraine. Many even risked their lives,” recalled the Polish president.
“I will try to attribute this to emotions. Let’s not forget that Zelensky is under enormous pressure. He sends people to the front, often to their deaths. There are people dying in combat every day,” Duda concluded.
