The Cuban embassy in Washington was attacked on Sunday night by two Molotov cocktails, said the head of Cuban diplomacy, calling the incident a “terrorist attack.”
“The Cuban embassy in the United States was the target of a terrorist attack perpetrated by an individual who threw two Molotov cocktails,” said Bruno Rodríguez in a message published on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
“The (embassy) staff did not suffer any harm,” he added.
An “unacceptable” attack
Ambassador Lianys Torres Rivera said the embassy “immediately contacted US authorities, who agreed to the mission to take samples of Molotov cocktails.”
Questioned on Monday during his press conference, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller called the attack “unacceptable” and confirmed that US and Cuban authorities were “in contact.”
This is the second attack on the Cuban mission in Washington in recent years. A man opened fire on the building in April 2020, causing no injuries.
The attack on Sunday night in Washington occurred a few hours after the return to Havana of Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, who had stayed in New York, where he attended the United Nations General Assembly in particular.
In New York, Cuban residents in the United States demonstrated against the presence of the Cuban president at the UN, according to publications and videos shared on social networks.
“Anti-Cuban groups resort to terrorism when they believe they can benefit from impunity, something Cuba has repeatedly warned US authorities against,” Bruno Rodríguez added after Sunday’s attack.
In April 2020, the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs summoned the American chargé d’affaires in Havana, Mara Tekach, to express his “strong protest” after the “terrorist attack” against his embassy.
