Moroccan Prime Minister promises rapid reconstruction of the country after the earthquake

The Moroccan prime minister promised this Tuesday a “rapid reconstruction” of what was destroyed by the September 8 earthquake that killed some 3,000 people, guaranteeing that “all available means” will be used.

Aziz Ajanuch spoke after the fourth meeting of the inter-ministerial commission for the reconstruction and recovery of infrastructure, such as schools and hospitals, affected by the earthquake of magnitude 6.8 on the Richter scale.

The projects will be financed by a special account created for relief and reconstruction efforts by order of King Mohamed VI, it said in a statement released today.

The official added that in the coming days there will be meetings to coordinate the work and create an entity that “guarantees the effective implementation of this program.”

Last week, the monarch announced that an amount equivalent to 11 billion euros will be allocated for the reconstruction of the provinces affected by the earthquake.

The money will be invested over five years in the six most affected regions: Al Haouz, Alilal, Chichaua, Marrakech, Taroudant and Ouarzazat and will provide services to 4.2 million people.

Faced with the tragedy of September 8, the international community offered humanitarian aid, but Rabat only accepted offers from a few countries.

The King only appeared in public four days after the earthquake, when he visited a hospital in Marrakech where hundreds of injured people were recovering.
