War in Ukraine: Russia publishes photo of Black Sea Fleet commander killed in kyiv

The imbroglio around Viktor Sokolov. The Russian Defense Ministry on Tuesday released an image showing the commander of the Black Sea Fleet participating in a video conference, after Ukraine claimed to have killed him on Monday.

In the photo, the official appears on a large screen, along with other senior military officers attending a meeting chaired by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. A statement, which does not mention the name of the official, indicates that this meeting took place on Tuesday.

Strike in Crimea

According to kyiv, the officer was killed during a missile attack on the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in annexed Crimea. “34 officers, including the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, were killed” after the attack, Ukrainian special forces said on Telegram, without providing evidence.

Russia reported Friday that only one soldier was missing after the attack that severely damaged the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

Viktor Sokolov was appointed commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in August 2022, according to information from the Russian state agency Tass at the time.
