According to the military government of the southern region of Ukraine, Russia this morning attacked the western bank of the Dnieper River, in Kherson, with seven air-to-air missiles, killing one person.
In the city of Kherson, “a 41-year-old resident was fatally injured at the entrance to his house,” the region’s military administration reported on the messaging platform Telegram, saying Russia continues to occupy the eastern bank of the Dnieper.
“The enemy also launched seven air missiles in the Mikolaivka area of Berislav district,” the source added.
Ukrainian authorities in Kherson are still assessing the damage caused by these missiles, which are launched from aircraft but can explode when they hit the ground.
According to the military government, Russia attacked the Ukrainian-controlled part of the region 109 times on Wednesday, including 33 times against the city of Kherson, using artillery, rockets, mortars and projectiles fired from tanks and aircraft.
Attacks ‘terrorize’ the people of Kherson, says Zelensky
The new wave comes hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned during the day about the intense attacks “terrorising” the population of the part of Kherson under Ukrainian control.
In his daily address to the nation on Wednesday evening, Zelensky cited “the harshness” of Russia’s bombing of Kherson and in particular the Berislav district and the region’s capital.
The head of state accused Russia of attacking the area with “artillery” and “air missiles” and hitting “houses, farms, communal shops and infrastructure”.
“The well-known terror of the occupiers,” Zelensky underlined, speaking encouraging words to the victims and their families and asking Ukraine’s allies for “more means” to protect themselves from Russian “terror.”
Also this morning, Ukrainian air defenses destroyed more than 30 drones during a Russian attack on the Odessa and Mykolaiv regions in the south of the country, a spokeswoman for the Southern Command of the Ukrainian Army said.
“Several groups of attack drones were launched” in these regions, Natalya Gumenyuk stated, referring to “a massive attack.”
“However, the air defense work was quite effective. More than thirty drones were destroyed. The Air Force will provide more accurate estimates,” he added.
“The enemy does not stop attacking, does not stop applying pressure and looking for new tactics, especially the use of mass attacks,” Gumenyuk said.
Russian forces regularly target this region of southern Ukraine, which overlooks the Black Sea, where port infrastructure is crucial for maritime trade.
The number of attacks has increased since Russia in July canceled an agreement that allowed Ukraine to freely export its grain production.
