Ursula Von der Leyen calls for agreement on the migration pact

The president of the European Commission on Thursday called on European Union (EU) home affairs ministers meeting in Brussels to agree on the new set of rules governing migration and asylum within the bloc.

“I urgently appeal to Member States to reach an agreement on the regulation of the crisis at today’s meeting of interior ministers,” Ursula Von der Leyen said.

“We have to finish the job now. We must ensure the correct implementation of the pact,” the European Commission president added in Split, Croatia, where she is taking part in a meeting of the European People’s Party.

Proposed by the European Commission in 2020the new Pact on Migration and Asylum aims to create a fairer, more efficient and sustainable migration and asylum process for the European Union, with an emphasis on solidarity and sharing of responsibilities among Member States.

However, negotiations have been slow, amid deep divisions within the bloc over how to proceed, with strong opposition from Hungary and Poland.

EU home affairs ministers will meet on Thursday to discuss migration at the Home Affairs Council in Brussels.

Spain, which presides over the EU this semester, will present a report on the progress of negotiations on the pact.

Diplomatic sources indicated that despite the progress made in June, the countries managed to conclude two key elements of the Pact [o Regulamento sobre Procedimentos de Asilo e o Regulamento de Gestão da Migração]we are now waiting for agreement on the last subject, the Crisis Management Regulation, which will be applied, for example, in the event of large migration waves.
