Two Israelis shot dead in ‘terrorist’ attack in East Jerusalem

Two Israelis were shot at at a checkpoint in East Jerusalem on Saturday, with police speaking of a “terrorist” attack. According to local media, the shots were fired from a vehicle, with the wounded being a border guard and a security guard.

A third person, whose nationality is not listed, has been hit by “fragments”, according to Israeli emergency services.

A police spokesperson said in a statement a “terrorist shot and seriously injured two Israelis” at a checkpoint near the Shuafat Palestinian refugee camp.

The injured were in their twenties and taken to hospital, according to emergency services. “This is a woman in critical condition and a man in serious condition,” added the same source.

The third person received treatment at the scene, he added without elaborating.

“Israeli police are currently looking for the suspect who fled” from the site of the attack, police said.

The area was cordoned off by the police. Dozens of officers were deployed around the checkpoint and in the refugee camp.

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid described the shooting as a “serious” attack.

“My heart goes out tonight with the injured and their families. Terror will not defeat us, we are strong even in this difficult night,” he said in a statement.

East Jerusalem has been an Israeli-occupied and annexed sector since 1967.

Two Palestinians killed in the West Bank

Hours before the attack, Israeli soldiers killed two Palestinians in a military strike in the West Bank, Palestinian officials said, noting that the clash made 2022 the deadliest year in the occupied territory since 2015.

The attack took place in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank, the site of repeated clashes between Israeli forces and local residents, known as a stronghold for Palestinian militants.

Palestinian authorities said soldiers entered the camp in the morning and surrounded a house.

The Palestinian Health Ministry reported the existence of two dead and eleven injured, three of whom were in serious condition.

The Israeli military, for its part, said it had arrested a wanted man and reported gun battles in Jenin, but did not provide further details.

The incident happened a day after two Palestinian teenagers, ages 14 and 17, were murdered by Israelis elsewhere in the occupied West Bank.
