State of emergency declared in New York after flooding

The heavy rains that fell last night in the northeastern United States left parts of New York City under water this Friday, partially interrupting subway circulation and the flow of flights at the airports of the country’s financial capital. Local Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for the city, Long Island to the east and the Hudson River Valley to the north, warning people not to drive on flooded roads.

Images from across New York City show half-submerged cars and traffic jams, with some major roads completely blocked. New York’s massive subway system was also affected by the flooding, with several lines closed in Brooklyn.

“The service is suspended in many stations. Please stay home if you do not need to travel,” advises the metro on social networks.

The country’s National Weather Service warned of the possibility of flooding until the end of Friday, with 5.1 centimeters of rain per hour.

“Excessive runoff will likely cause numerous cases of flash flooding in urban and drainage areas, as well as along small rivers and streams,” it warned.

The rain was caused by a low pressure phenomenon along the coast in the middle of the Atlantic, which draws in moist air from the ocean. In September 2021, Hurricane Ida also caused extensive flooding in the region and killed 13 people.
