Las Vegas police arrested a man on Friday in connection with the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, the newspaper reported. BBCthat the AP news agency quotes.
The musician was killed with four shots during a shooting in Las Vegas when he was just 25 years old. Those responsible for the crime were never found.
Las Vegas police said in July they had searched a home as part of the investigation into the nearly 30-year-old murder of the legendary American rapper.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department “can confirm that a search and seizure warrant has been served” in the neighboring Nevada city of Henderson (west), a spokesperson said in a statement to AFP at the time. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that a home had been searched.
Tupac had a short career, but he quickly rose from dancer to self-proclaimed “rap gangster” and one of hip-hop’s most influential representatives, with 75 million records sold. He also became one of the exponents of the famous rivalry, encouraged by event promoters, between East and West Coast hip hop. Although he was born in New York, Tupac moved to California with his family during his adolescence and became one of the most important names in that region’s music scene.
The circumstances of his death, in September 1996, have not yet been clarified, giving rise to a range of theories about what happened.
Tupac’s murder was followed six months later by the death of his rival, East Coast rapper Christopher ‘The Notorious BIG’. Many believe the two were murdered as part of a rivalry between their record labels, Death Row in Los Angeles and Bad Boy Entertainment in New York. But some music historians argue that the bi-coastal dispute took on an exaggerated tone for commercial reasons.
Tupac Shakur used his lyrics to highlight the issues black Americans face, ranging from police brutality to mass incarceration.
