Seven people were killed and another four poisoned by smoke inhalation in a fire that broke out at the Teatre nightclub in Murcia, Spanish authorities said this Sunday. Two people are still missing.
The National Police (PN) confirms that the death toll is at seven and does not rule out that emergency services will find more bodies in the nightclub where a fire broke out overnight.
According to the PN, the people who suffered the poisoning are two women aged 22 and 25 and two men aged 41 and 45.
Firefighters from Murcia Municipality and the Fire Fighting and Rescue Consortium of the Region of Murcia worked to extinguish the flames, which forced the closure of traffic on Alicante’s motorway and at the entrances to the Las Atalayas shopping area and nightclubs.
The request for a firefighting helicopter from the General Directorate of Citizen Safety and Emergencies has been canceled due to the availability of sufficient land resources to extinguish the fire in the area, where several ambulances and police teams are present as a preventive measure.
After the flames were extinguished, the area inspection has so far found the lifeless bodies of seven people, although before the search began, eight were missing from a group of friends celebrating a birthday.
An information room for relatives has been set up in the adjacent sports palace, where a team of psychologists guides the families of the victims.
On site, in addition to the emergency services and firefighters, specialized units from the Murcia Police Station are investigating the fires to determine the origin of the fire.
