Russia calls up 130,000 citizens for compulsory military service

This Sunday, Russia launched its second call for compulsory military service, in which it plans to recruit 130,000 citizens between the ages of 18 and 27, including the annexed Ukrainian regions of Kherson, Zaporijia, Donetsk and Luhansk.

Simultaneously with the start of this year’s second recruitment campaign, which runs until December 31, a law came into force that increased the fine for failure to appear at the recruitment services to 30,000 rubles (just over $300).

Russian authorities have guaranteed that no recruits will be sent to military action zones in Ukraine or to units occupying the “new regions,” a designation Moscow used to describe the regions annexed a year ago: Kherson, Zaporijia, Donetsk and Luhansk , even though this is not the case. control over all these areas.

Vice Admiral and Chief of Organization and Mobilization of the Russian General Staff Vladimir Tsimlianski stated on Friday that the number of “volunteers participating in the special military operation [guerra na Ucrânia] sufficient to fulfill the defined tasks”.

According to the official, the high command has no plans for “additional mobilization actions” for the military campaign in Ukraine.

In August, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin passed a law raising the maximum age for compulsory military service by three years to 30 years, which will come into effect on January 1, 2024.

The initiative to raise the age for military service was proposed late last year by Russian Defense Minister Serguéi Shoigú, after hundreds of thousands of military-age men left Russia following the mobilization declared by Putin in September 2022.
