At least nine people died and five dozen were injured this Sunday after the roof of a church collapsed during a mass in Ciudad Modero, in northeastern Mexico, local authorities said.
The structure of the building collapsed during a baptism mass, but at the moment the causes of the accident that occurred around 3:30 p.m. (10:30 p.m. in Lisbon) are unknown.
The governor of the state of Tamaulipas, Américo Villarreal, regretted the incident in a message on the social network X (formerly Twitter): “My solidarity with all the families who lost their loved ones and with the community due to this unfortunate accident.”
A video captured by a neighborhood security camera, which was later shared on social networks, shows the moment when the ceiling began to crack and fall into the church.
Elements of Civil Protection, Red Cross, National Guard and Firefighters, among others, are working at the site.
Two cranes are in the area to assist in the removal of debris.
