Manslaughter investigation into fire deaths at Spanish nightclub

The Spanish justice system opened an investigation for “involuntary manslaughter” after the violent fire that caused the death of 13 people inside a nightclub in Murcia.

An investigating judge from the Murcia Court “will be in charge of directing the investigation in order to clarify the facts and determine, where appropriate, criminal responsibilities,” states a press release.

The magistrate is “waiting for the identification” of the victims and the results of the “autopsies” to be completed and “will inform the court of the causes and circumstances of the deaths,” the same document also indicates.

The Murcia city council indicated on Monday that the nightclub where the fire occurred, around six in the morning on Sunday (five in the morning in Lisbon), had been the subject of an administrative closure order since last year, but that said order had not been executed.

Those responsible for the establishment stated that the club “was in order.”

“No one informed us that a valid license no longer existed,” declared lawyer Francisco Adán.

According to the regional prosecutor of Murcia, José Luis Díaz Manzanera, the sentences for this case can be up to nine years in prison, “given the high number of victims.”

The investigation must determine “if preventive measures were lacking” against the fires, Manzanera explained to the local newspaper La Opinión de Murcia.

“There may also have been a short circuit that was not caused by a lack of prevention,” he added.
