The bridge connecting mainland Russia to the Crimean peninsula is on fire, RIA Novosti and Tass news agencies reported, citing a Russian official there.
The same source indicated that it was a fuel tank that caught fire, cutting off road traffic on the bridge.
It is an important access point that Russia built after it occupied and annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, in violation of international law.
The fire came hours after explosions hit the Ukrainian city of Kharkov this morning.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said on Telegram’s messaging platform that the explosions were the result of rocket attacks in the center of the city, with no casualties so far.
Russia opens investigation
Russia has opened a criminal investigation into the explosion that caused the collapse of part of the bridge connecting Russia to the Crimean peninsula on Saturday, AFP reported.
The Russian Commission of Inquiry said it had “opened a criminal investigation into the Crimean Bridge incident”, adding that the explosion happened after “a truck exploded”.
According to the Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee, a truck bomb caused seven wagons of fuel to catch fire, resulting in a “partial collapse of two sections of the bridge”.
