The leader of the United States House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, plans to force a vote this Tuesday on the radical right’s attempt to impeach him and insists that he will not reach an agreement with Democrats to remain in office.
McCarthy’s fate is uncertain as he faces what is known as an “impeachment motion” from Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, one of his most prominent critics.
The support of a few Republicans would be needed to remove McCarthy as speaker of the House of Representatives, if Democrats voted in favor along with conservatives.
McCarthy told his colleagues in a closed-door meeting to move forward, according to a Republican in the room, cited by the Associated Press, about the congressman’s plans.
This is a watershed moment for McCarthy, who is receiving the harshest punishment yet from his partisan peers and was prompted by his decision to work with Democrats to keep the federal government running rather than risk a closure (shutdown).
So far, several ultra-conservative Republicans have said they are willing to oppose McCarthy, who has faced multiple challenges since the beginning of his term, including a long and drawn-out battle to be nominated for the position.
Congressman Matt Gaetz announced Monday that he will propose that the impeachment of the House of Representatives leader be put to a vote “this week.”
Gaetz, speaking to reporters outside the Capitol, said he intends to bring a vote to the House floor.
This Republican congressman, a supporter of former President Donald Trump, accuses the current House leader of working with Democrats to avoid a temporary government shutdown.
Gaetz added that if he does not have the votes necessary to give the green light to impeachment, he will try as many times as necessary.
On Sunday, the congressman had already told CNN that he planned to take steps to remove McCarhty, after Congress averted a government shutdown with the passage of a law that extends funding for critical issues for 45 days, despite the reluctance of “more radical Trumpists like Gaetz.
Matt Gaetz also accused McCarthy of lying and reaching a “secret deal” with Democrats on future Ukraine funding, which he and other Republicans oppose.
“To expand the spending and political priorities of the [Presidente Joe] “Biden, the leader of the House of Representatives gave Biden the money he asked for for Ukraine,” said the ultra-conservative politician.
The agreement reached on Saturday gives the Government a break, but leaves the Democrats with several challenges ahead, especially how to maintain aid to kyiv.
The resolution excluded the aid to Ukraine requested by Biden, which amounted to 24 billion dollars (22.7 billion euros).
The Senate reduced these funds to 6,000 million dollars (5,700 million euros), although in its final approval, by 88 votes in favor and 9 against, the expansion did not include this financing either.
The House of Representatives is now expected to vote on a separate bill to help the country deal with the Russian invasion.
