Russian President Vladimir Putin today accused the Ukrainian secret services of being behind the explosion that damaged the Crimean bridge on Saturday, calling it a “terrorist act” against important infrastructure.
“The authors, artists and sponsors are the Ukrainian secret services,” Putin said during a meeting with the chairman of the Russian Investigative Committee, Alexandr Bastrikin, according to a video distributed by the Kremlin.
A massive explosion, which Russian authorities blamed on a booby-trapped truck, damaged the Crimean Bridge on Saturday morning, a road and rail link connecting Russia to this Ukrainian peninsula annexed in 2014.
Russia had so far refrained from accusing Ukraine of this attack, which left three dead, and kyiv has not claimed responsibility, but Ukrainian officials have multiplied ironic and derisive comments about the incident.
The Crimean Bridge, built at great expense and opened in 2018 by Vladimir Putin, is also used for logistical transportation of Russian troops fighting in Ukraine.
Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly threatened to attack infrastructure.
