Russian journalist who protested on television sentenced to eight and a half years in prison

A Russian journalist who works for state television and protested against the Kremlin’s military intervention in Ukraine last year was sentenced on Wednesday to more than eight years in prison for spreading disinformation about the Russian army.

A Moscow court said Marina Ovsyannikova, a former Channel One editor who interrupted a live broadcast, has been jailed for eight years and six months.

Ovsyannikova, 45, left Russia after the procedure began, having found shelter in Paris.

The journalist became a symbol of the anti-war movement in Russia when she appeared in a news program on the pro-Kremlin channel in March last year, where she worked with a poster denouncing the offensive in Ukraine and the government’s “propaganda” denounced. controlled press.

Ovsyannikova, who wore an electronic bracelet and was reportedly under house arrest, says it was fear that prompted her to leave the country.

Marina left Moscow at the beginning of the first weekend of October last year, at a time when she thought police would be less active, and changed cars seven times until she crossed the border on foot.

“Our last vehicle got stuck in the mud and we had no mobile network reception. We tried to find our way through the stars. It was a very dangerous and stressful escape,” he revealed in February.

In her report, the journalist did not provide details about which border she crossed or any other information that could endanger the people who helped her.
